How to become a good Fielder?

If you are an amateur cricketer and cannot field well, it can be very frustrating for both you and the team. Blunders while fielding and catching can really led to team losses when you could have really won otherwise. Just imagine if you drop a good batsman when he is in on 3 or 5 and then he goes on to make a 100.

Taking that chance is what would have been the disagreement between a win and a loss. Catches win matches is a overused phrase but it is wholly true. Here are some easy tips that you can use to field great during a match and help your team out.

Fluke

Position - Field in a position where you are comfortable. If you are heavy and not very agile, you should stay away from positions like fine leg or third man as there will be a lot of surface to do at these positions. A more apt position would be a short mid wicket or short cover. The walk in - A fielder has to walk in. This applies to every fielder except the close in catchers. A few steps in the form of a walk in allow you to gather a tiny momentum which you can use to convert direction and move to your left or right accordingly. If you instead just stood flat footed, you will take time to get enthralling and miss the ball. For catches, let the ball come to you - I have seen so many amateur cricketers drop so many catches because the ball hits the hand too hard. Just before the ball comes in experience with the ball, you have to gently start enthralling your hand away and behind the ball such that it nests into your hand as opposed to bounce on it. Throwing tips - Some have a powerful arm while some do not. You should stand in a position accordingly. Your aim is also important. If you can throw accurate, sharp, short distance throws, a good position would be point or covers. If you can however haul in long powerful throws, positions like deep mid wicket, long on, long off are more ideal for you.

Lastly, a good fielder wants the ball to come to him. He anticipates the ball and is enthusiastic about his fielding. Once you gain that attitude, you will find your self reliance expanding and it will start to reflect in your fielding performance.
